The National Zoo recently said goodbye to adorable baby panda, Bao Bao. Here at Scraawl, we conducted a social media data analysis of Bao Bao’s departure to bid her farewell and to sigh over the cub’s cuteness.
Running the search query [ “Bao Bao” OR “BaoBao” OR “#BaoBao” ] on Twitter from February 12th to the 22nd, we collected about 34,000 posts.
Top hashtags were #byebyebaobao and #baobao. But it wasn’t all about the bear. Turns out this was also great branding for FedEx, whose Twitter account was also one of the top mentions thanks to tweets like this:

We also looked at photos of Bao Bao to reminisce thanks to the generated media gallery. Here were a few choice images:
Twitter Sentiment Analysis
In the advanced analytic, sentiment analysis, Scraawl classified all the tweets as neutral, positive or negative. The resulting sentiment was “bittersweet” as one tweet put it, a mix of happiness for the panda and sadness at her goodbye. As you can see in the graph below, the majority of the tweets were neutral and then slightly more positive than negative.
